Goal
On the test field, technologies of networked and automated driving can be tested in everyday, public road traffic. Among other things, various types of traffic areas were prepared, high-precision 3D maps were generated, sensors for real-time recording of traffic and its influencing factors were installed, and systems for anonymizing and quickly transferring the recorded data were provided.
Applications
- Automated driving functions; passenger car, truck, bus
- Automated work & driving functions (only in urban areas); special vehicles
- Networked driving functions (V2V, V2I): passenger car, truck, bus, tram
- Intermodal mobility concepts; passenger cars, public transport, micromobiles
- Sustainable mobility management
- Mobility apps and services
- Barrier-free and open data for services
- Smart roads
- Recording and influencing traffic
Framework conditions
Test tracks and zones
- Motorways (incl. motorway junctions, triangles and junctions)
- State and federal roads (out of town, speed 60-100)
- inner-city. Routes with different Speed limits (30, 50, 60, 70, 80) and different number of directional lanes, partly with integrated TRAM route
- Shared Spaces (walking pace)
- Parking spaces, multi-storey car parks, underground car parks
- Bridges and tunnels
- additional, closed off test area
Technology
Test benches
- Complete vehicle test benches (passenger cars, trucks, buses), usable as X-in-the-Loop (coupling with simulation)
Simulation tools
- Vehicle behaviour (driving dynamics, energy)
- Traffic flow
- V2X-communication
Test equipment
Road equipment (infrastructure equipment)
- Sensors for detailed recording of the traffic situation
- Street weather stations (also mobile)
- RSUs on light signal systems and variable message signs*
Transmission technology (networking)

- Partial coverage with 5G technology (planned for the longer term)
- RSUs (ETSI ITS-G5 / IEEE802.11p) on traffic light systems
- Infrastructure connection via optical fibre
Provision of information (IT backend)
- Consolidation and provision of the data collected in the test field
- Integration of public transport* data
- highly accurate 3D maps (incl. updates)
Test benches
- Complete vehicle test stands (passenger cars, trucks, buses), can be used as X-in-the-Loop (coupling with simulation)
Simulation tools
- Vehicle behaviour (driving dynamics, energy)
- flow of traffic
- V2X communication
